Izzy was initially very nervous around kids. I knew it was really important to help her be comfortable around all kinds of people. People of all types and ages. She met our grandkids, and they were great with her and were calm and gentle but unfortunately not all kids are like that when they meet dogs. We took her to a park and had many excited kids approach her and this was more challenging, but we were able to make it a positive experience for her. She was initially nervous, but we asked the kids to approach calmly and gave her lots of treats, and she got more comfortable. Then we met 3 wonderful kids on our camping trip who realized she was scared of them and took the time to help her be comfortable. I think this was the turning point for her. Then my amazing daughter-in-law arranged a visit for us to visit a second-grade classroom at the school she teaches at. I was worried this could be too much for Izzy, so I asked a friend from F.E.T.C.H Therapy dogs to attend with us in case Izzy had a meltdown. Well, sitting quietly for my presentation and the questions was a bit much for her but a chew helped and once we started walking around to meet each child, she did great! She didn't show any fear of the kids and was very confident in each meeting. Yesterday we had a party and there were almost 30 people there and several kids. Everyone wanted to meet Izzy. She did great! When we walked in, she was surprised there were so many people. I swear she looked around and decided they were all there to see her. The kids all spent time with her and she was not only completely comfortable, she enjoyed being with them. She enjoyed each person she met. I have no doubt, this girl is going to be an amazing therapy dog.
