Izzy's Second Camping Trip

Izzy LOVED camping.
Izzy LOVED camping.

Just got back from an amazing camping trip at the Metolius River. This was Izzy's second camping trip. She went on one last summer. I really think that early experience made this trip go smoother. This girl loves camping! We took a long hike every morning along the river and then a shorter hike in the evening. She was a bit hesitant as a puppy in water, but she has definitely decided water is the best thing ever now. So much so, that is is difficult to get her to walk past a good swimming hole. She did great with the X-pen and great in the trailer. My friend Marie and her husband, Rob, joined us for a morning hike and then picnic. Marie and I have been friends for at least 40 years. We have been meeting every summer for a hike, and it is always like no time has passed. Camping was a great way to work on all of the behaviors Izzy will need for being a therapy dog. She met a lot of people of all different ages and did great with them all. She also did great with every dog we encountered. Although playing with her dog friends is her favorite thing in the world, she has learned that when she is on leash she should not engage with dogs we meet. We even encountered one dog who was extremely reactive and barked and growled at her. She just calmly looked at it like she was wondering what was up with it. It is so nice having a dog that is not reactive. She also did well when we saw some horses. She was curious and watched them, but she did not react. I really believe the early exposure to horses helped. When we weren't hiking or taking her in the water, she just enjoyed hanging out in our campsite and people and dog watching. She also loves to watch birds and butterflies. She especially loves birds. Our last night, we walked to a Mexican restaurant in Camp Sherman and had a great meal under the trees and Izzy did really well with settling. Service was a bit slow and she was so patient.

I started this blog to share the journey of training my next therapy dog, Izzy. I'll be documenting our activities and experiences, aiming to inform and inspire fellow dog lovers on this rewarding journey. Because I'm passionate about all animals, there will also be posts about other animals, including my cats (Christopher, GrayC and Stitch). Thanks for joining us!
