Using the Capture technique for Peek-a-boo.
Using the Capture technique for Peek-a-boo.

We are in the Tricks level 2 class now. Teaching tricks is a great enrichment activity as well as a great way to continue to stregthen your working bond. It is also great for enhancing what we do on therapy visits. At the hospital, large dogs are not allowed on patient beds or to put their paws on the beds. It makes it really difficult for patients to interact with the dogs. I'm training Izzy to put her front paws on a step stool so it will be easier for patients to interact with her. I used the foundation I have learned in our tricks class to teach this. She is doing great with it.

Other things we are working on are putting her head on people's laps, bow, bang, peek-a-boo, roll over, spin, and carrying a little bucket. Putting her head on people's laps and paws up will help her interact with people and people always appreciate the dogs doing a few tricks.

Dedicated to Emmi who challenged everything I thought I knew about dogs and who became the most amazing therapy dog ever.

I started this blog to share the journey of training my next therapy dog, Izzy. I'll be documenting our activities and experiences, aiming to inform and inspire fellow dog lovers on this rewarding journey. Because I'm passionate about all animals, there will also be posts about other animals, including my cats (Christopher, GrayC and Stitch). Thanks for joining us!
