More Progress

Izzy is making incredible progress! I am now positive that I have a therapy dog. She is doing great with meeting people. No jumping. Mostly waits for me to tell her it's OK to say "Hi". She loves to see people and loves the attention. She had a recheck with her vet and look at her settling and patiently waiting. You can also tell the vet clinic is one of her happy places. Taking her in for lots of visits when she was a puppy sure paid off!

Yesterday we had a dance party at our place. I brought Izzy down to meet people. We had around 25 guests. She was excited but well-behaved and acted really calm when meeting people. She is starting to lean on people and rest her forehead against their thigh which is really sweet. I even had one of my friends who she hadn't seen since October, hold her while I got the music going. She did great.

Today I took her back to McKenzie-Willamette Medical Center. We met with our therapy dog coordinator there and then walked to 3 of the units and visited the nurses (I'm not comfortable having Izzy visit any patients until she is certified and has her insurance). She met our liasion in HR. She rocked the elevator. Acted like it was nothing. The puppy elevator trips must have helped because Emmi was terrified initially of elevators. She visited with several people on the way to the units and then visited nursing staff at three units. She was very appropriate with everyone. She was very interested in interacting but remained calm and gentle. She again leaned into several people and they loved it. When we walked by someone who did not engage, she would look at them as if saying "hey, don't you want to pet me?" but would keep going. Not even a year old and she is rocking this therapy dog thing! It does take a lot out of her though. Being that good is really tough for a one-year old dog! The picture below is how she spent the rest of the afternoon.

Therapy work is exhausting.

I started this blog to share the journey of training my next therapy dog, Izzy. I'll be documenting our activities and experiences, aiming to inform and inspire fellow dog lovers on this rewarding journey. Because I'm passionate about all animals, there will also be posts about other animals, including my cats (Christopher, GrayC and Stitch). Thanks for joining us!
